FAQ

What is Dragon Skin Coating?
Dragon Skin A/R coating is an advanced broadband multi-layer oleophobic anti-reflective coating. It is applied in a vacuum chamber using high voltage electron beam ionization to evaporate a series of different materials. The thickness of each layer is controlled by a state-of-the-art software system using a quartz crystal as an in-chamber-measuring device.

What is oleophobic?
Oleophobic means oil-repellent. Our Oleophobic Dragon Skin coating repels dust, oil (finger prints), and dirt.

What is different about Dragon Skin?
Dragon Skin coating was engineered with a thermally cured, hard lacquer anti-scratch surface designed specifically for lenses. This extremely hard quartz based layer sets Dragon Skin apart from all other coatings with its incredible scratch resistance. Subsequent layers of aluminum and titanium are deposited to eliminate reflections. Finally, an oleophobic topcoat is applied to protect the coating and aid in ease of cleaning. An ion source is used during the deposition process to ensure flawless coatings. Only state-of-the-art equipment is capable of applying this coating due to extremely tight tolerances.

What is the residual color of Dragon Skin Coating?
The residual color of this coating is a light greenish tint. There are two reasons for this color. First, green is the most neutral color of the spectrum, and therefore is the least obvious to the shooter. Second, the A/R coating has the best performance in the green spectrum enabling higher light transmission rates.

Can the True Spot lens be used for 3D?
The True Spot lens works best for shooting spot targets.  In the beginning Jim did grind True Spot lenses with spot sizes as large as one inch. In large scopes this gave a wide field of view with the equivalent of a 1" scope floating in the middle of the lens.

What are the advantages of clarifiers?
Clarifiers will bring images past 20 feet in focus if the correct combination of power and distance is used.

What are the disadvantages of clarifiers?
Clarifiers make close images difficult to see ( pins, dots, etc.). The higher the power clarifier the more difficult it is to see close.

Can dots or circles be used on the True Spot Lens?
Yes, if you prefer a center dot you will find a True Spot lens is much easier to use than a
standard 4x, 6x, or 8x lens.  I would recommend a 3/8" spot with the same power in the center as the lens your are used to shooting. This will give a large relaxed field of view.
True Spot Lenses are optical glass ground to exceptional quality with Dragon Skin Coating.

Can clarifiers be used with the True Spot Lens?
Yes, since the True Spot Lens eliminates the need for a pin or dot, a clarifier can bring the
the magnified X into focus. This is a personal preference as many people shoot the True Spot
lens without a clarifier.

What works best for 3D?
There are now several new options for 3D:
A center drilled Air-O lens, a fiber optic pin kit, or the Double Vision system.

How do I choose my Perma-Dot size?
Perma-Dots are made the same size as our "Just Dots" vinyl dot kit. Pick up a dot kit to determine your preferred sight picture. Five dot sizes available.
